Become a certified EVM Practitioner who can turn performance data into programme decisions
The APMG Earned Value Management Practitioner certification, delivered fully self-paced and built by project controls practitioners. Move beyond the formulae and learn how to apply EVM insight to real programme scenarios, performance reviews and recovery decisions.
Practitioner is where Earned Value stops being theory and starts driving decisions
Plenty of courses can teach you the formulae. This one is built by specialists who interpret EVM in live programme reviews and recovery decisions every week — so what you learn is how the discipline is actually used when the pressure is on.
Recognised credential
An accredited APMG Training Organisation, aligned to the official Practitioner syllabus and exam.
Written by practitioners
Authored by specialists who apply Earned Value in programme reviews, forecasting and recovery — not theory rewritten for a slide deck.
Built around scenarios
Grounded in the applied, scenario-based way the Practitioner exam works — and the way real delivery decisions are made.
Decisions, not just measures
Every concept ties to interpreting the data and choosing a credible action you can defend.
Knowing the formulae is not the same as knowing what to do
Many people can calculate CPI and SPI. Far fewer can stand in a programme review, explain what the numbers really mean, diagnose the cause and recommend a credible recovery. Practitioner is where Earned Value becomes a decision-making tool.
Interpret
Read PV, EV, AC and the indices in the context of a real programme, not in isolation.
Diagnose
Trace a variance to its cause and judge whether it is a one-off or an emerging trend.
Forecast
Use EAC, ETC and TCPI to say where the programme is genuinely heading.
Advise and act
Translate the evidence into recommendations stakeholders can act on with confidence.
The same certification, with the time to master the scenarios
Practitioner is applied and scenario-heavy. A fixed classroom week rushes the very thing that makes the difference: working through complex situations until the decision logic is second nature. Self-paced gives you that time, and the accredited outcome.
Same accredited Practitioner certification. Same official APMG exam. Built for the way senior project professionals actually develop applied skill.
A scenario-based environment, not a folder of PDFs
Applied case-study scenarios, interpretation exercises, scenario-based knowledge checks, revision-focus tracking and Practitioner exam practice — everything you need to walk into the assessment ready to apply, not just recall.
Every scenario, where you are up to and what to revisit
A clear path through the applied material — the dashboard always shows the next scenario and the areas worth another pass before the exam.
Realistic programme situations
Work through case-study scenarios and choose the right EVM response — the way you would in a real review.
Checks that probe interpretation
Applied questions that check how you read the data and choose an action, not whether you can recall a definition.
Practice in the real format
Scenario-based practice that mirrors the style and demands of the official APMG Practitioner assessment.
Know exactly what to revisit
Progress tracking highlights the scenario types and topics to focus on before you sit the exam.
What Practitioner certification lets you actually do
Practitioner is about application. By the end you are not recalling definitions — you are using Earned Value evidence to read a programme and shape what happens next.
Interpret EVM outputs in complex scenarios
Read performance data in the context of a real, messy programme and say what it actually means.
Diagnose cost and schedule issues
Trace variance to its cause and distinguish a temporary wobble from a structural problem.
Advise stakeholders with credible evidence
Brief a board or client on the position using performance evidence they can trust.
Select responses and recovery actions
Choose appropriate EVM responses and corrective actions, and justify why.
Apply EVM thinking in programme reviews
Bring interpretation and forecasting into live reviews, not just after-the-fact reporting.
Prepare for the APMG Practitioner assessment
Build the scenario-based answer technique the Practitioner exam is designed to test.
Six applied modules, from interpretation to programme decisions
A path that builds applied capability scenario by scenario, with worked decisions and scenario-based checks throughout. Expand any module to see what it covers.

You have the principles. This is where you learn to apply them.
Foundation builds understanding. Practitioner builds applied capability — the judgement to interpret performance and shape decisions. It is the natural next step on the EVM pathway.
Foundation
The core principles, the measures and how Earned Value reads a programme.
Practitioner
Apply Earned Value in practice — interpretation, diagnosis, forecasting and recovery decisions.
Advanced capability
The authority to own programme performance and lead project controls with confidence.
Practitioner builds on Foundation
Practitioner is designed for learners who already understand the core EVM principles and are ready to apply them. If you have not yet completed Foundation, start there first.
Need Foundation first?
Start with the EVM Foundation Self-Paced course to build the core principles, then progress to Practitioner with confidence.

Two decades of applied project controls behind every scenario
The Practitioner scenarios are not invented for a textbook. They come from real delivery — programme reviews, performance diagnosis, forecasting and recovery — by an accredited training organisation that works in project controls every week.
Thousands of project professionals have been reached through Xacom’s training, consulting and assurance work — the same applied expertise that now sits inside this Practitioner certification.
How Practitioner-level EVM improves programme decisions
At Practitioner level the value is not in the numbers themselves — it is in the interpretation, the diagnosis and the decisions that follow.
Defence Programme Review
Performance data existed but was not driving decisions — reports were produced, then set aside.
Clearer interpretation of variance, forecast and recovery options, so the data shaped the conversation and the next action.
Infrastructure Recovery Planning
The delivery team needed to understand whether recovery was realistic, or wishful thinking.
TCPI, EAC and trend analysis used to test recovery credibility and support a grounded decision.
Engineering Delivery Governance
Stakeholders challenged the credibility of the forecasts being presented.
A clearer evidence base and a stronger performance narrative that stood up to scrutiny.
Earned Value only changes outcomes when someone can interpret it and act. That is exactly what Practitioner builds.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Foundation before Practitioner?
Practitioner is designed for learners who already understand the core EVM principles. You should normally hold or have completed EVM Foundation, or have equivalent knowledge of the measures and how they work, before progressing. If you are new to Earned Value, start with Foundation first.
How is Practitioner different from Foundation?
Foundation is about understanding the principles and the measures. Practitioner is about applying them — interpreting performance data, diagnosing issues, forecasting outcomes and supporting recovery and stakeholder decisions. The learning and the exam are scenario-based rather than recall-based.
Is this suitable for experienced project controls professionals?
Yes. Experienced professionals often use Practitioner to formalise and accredit skills they already apply, and to sharpen their scenario-based exam technique. The applied focus means it stays relevant even if you work with EVM regularly.
Can I take Practitioner self-paced?
Yes. The whole course is self-paced and runs in your browser, so you can work through the applied scenarios around live delivery, revisit the difficult ones as often as you need, and sit the exam when you are ready.
How much study time should I allow?
Most learners are comfortable completing the Practitioner material over a few weeks of part-time study, fitted around work. Because it is self-paced and the six-month access window is generous, you can go faster or slower and spend more time on the scenarios that matter most to you.
Is the official APMG Practitioner exam included?
The exam is included if you choose the Course plus Official APMG Exam option at £2,195 plus VAT. The course-only option at £1,895 plus VAT does not include the exam, and you can add it later if you prefer.
Is the Practitioner exam scenario-based?
Yes. The Practitioner assessment is applied and scenario-based — it tests how you interpret information and choose the right response, not whether you can recall definitions. The course is built around that style, with scenario practice and answer technique throughout.
Why is Practitioner priced at a premium level?
Because of what sits behind it: accredited, applied training authored by practitioners who use EVM to make real programme decisions, a scenario-based platform with a full exam simulator, six months of access, and a route to the official APMG Practitioner certification. It is priced for the advanced capability it builds, not as a commodity e-learning module.
Can we roll this out to a team?
Yes. We offer volume pricing, flexible licence allocation, consolidated invoicing and a single point of contact for organisations building Practitioner-level capability across a team. Use the Request Team Pricing button, or call 0800 030 6727.
Can we buy Foundation and Practitioner together?
Yes. If you are upskilling a team from first principles through to applied capability, we can quote for Foundation and Practitioner together, including volume pricing and the simplest way to roll both out. Just tell us your numbers.
